Karate FAQ

Q: What is Uechi-ryu Karate like?

A: There are several forms or styles of Okinawan Karate in the world today. This school teaches the Okinawan style of karate called Uechi-Ryu which dates back to ancient China where it was developed from the tiger, dragon, and crane forms of Kung fu. Through these combined efforts, Uechi-Ryu karate now enjoys the prestige of being recognized as one of the world’s most powerful systems of self defense.

Q: I haven’t done any exercise in a long time, is that ok?

A: That’s ok, we’ll get you back into shape, and it will be fun.

Q: Will I be required to punch someone? How about them punching me?

A: We practice techniques with partners but it doesn’t involve full hitting of someone. Our goal is to learn traditional karate, self defense and have fun.

Q: I am afraid I will be too clumsy to start and I will be nervous. Any suggestions?

A: Don’t worry, we can teach all levels of physical ability. You must remember, that everyone in the Dojo started out like you are.

Q: How long does it take to get promoted?

A: It depends on how many times you attend each month and how quickly you learn the techniques.

Urban Survival Training FAQ

Q: What Are The Requirements To Be A U.S.T. Student?

A: You must be at least 15 years of age with a parents permission. You must be able to pass a background check. Note that Bob Otto’s School Of Karate withholds the right to refuse and/or terminate training to anyone at any time if that student uses or plans to use the knowledge gained in Urban Survival Tactics in an irresponsible or illegal manner.

Q: What Is Urban Survival Tactics?

A: UST is a no nonsense reality based fighting system comprised of a broad range of fighting styles such as Krav Maga, Okinawan Karate, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Kali, and boxing, just to name a few. UST merges only the most effective and practical techniques from across the martial arts spectrum and combines them with realistic training scenarios and enhanced physical and mental conditioning to achieve a devastatingly effective self defense system with practical, real world applications.

The Urban Survival Tactics system incorporates fitness, self-defense and fighting like no other system. UST’s fitness aspects compliment training by toning muscle and dramatically improving strength and stamina. UST’s self-defense classes are a total-body workout that combines kicking, punching, street fighting, ground fighting, along with defenses against weapons, getting students into prime physical shape.

Q: What Type Of Techniques Will I Learn At Bob Otto’s Urban Survival Tactics?

A: The system is based on simple tactics and instinctive movements; the reality-based system is designed to teach real self-defense in the shortest time possible. For example, you’ll learn to punch, kick, knee, elbow, and take down opponents, along with learning how to defend these same attacks you will defend against chokes, grabs, bear hugs and weapons (guns, knives, and bats, etc.) from all angles. You will even learn how to defend multiple attackers, armed and unarmed. The intensive training will teach you to function effectively under stress, shock and adrenaline. Learning UST will help you be safe and more secure, along with getting a great workout.

Q: How is UST Different From Other Martial Arts?

A: UST has no katas, no rituals, no “fillers”. Most mixed martial arts focus on the “sport” of fighting whereas Urban Survival Tactics’ only focus is to counter and survive violent and life threatening confrontations. Based on simple principles and instinctive movements, this reality-based system is designed to teach real self-defense in the shortest possible time to a diverse group of people. Another unique attribute of UST is that it is constantly evolving as it incorporates tactics and techniques from the across the martial arts spectrum. This ensures that we are providing the best possible training available at all times.

Q: Who Uses UST?

A: Currently the Urban Survival Tactics system is experiencing a growing demand from law enforcement agencies who are aware of the deficiencies in their current curriculums while UST classes are filling with the likes of S.W.A.T. and other professional operators who are taking it upon themselves to greatly increase their knowledge and proficiency in hand to hand and hand to weapon combat. Although UST is relatively new in the world of close combat systems the tactics and techniques we teach have been proven on the battlefield and in the streets by elite operators and law enforcement agencies worldwide. We feel that everyone has an equal right and personal duty to be able to protect themselves and their loved ones to the best of their ability regardless of their occupation (unlike many other systems that offer only a “watered down” version to civilians). Whether you are a soccer mom or Navy S.E.A.L. you will receive the best possible instruction available without compromise.

Q: Do I have to wear a uniform or any special equipment?

A: Unlike traditional martial arts, Urban Survival Tactics does not require a uniform. Comfortable sweats or shorts, t-shirt (an official UST shirt is included with your tuition), and sneakers (wrestling or mat shoes preferred) are suggested for training. Other safety items such as protective eyewear and groin protection for men are also suggested. Students should not wear jewelry of any kind. We also ask that students don’t wear perfume or cologne out of respect for students who may be sensitive or allergic.

Q: Do I need to be an athlete or have previous martial arts experience to take UST?

A: Absolutely not! Even the most seasoned fighters had to start somewhere at some time. Even though the classes are conducted in a group setting all students progress at their own pace. You will receive individual attention from our instructors to ensure you grasp the tactics and techniques and in your own time you will be able to execute those tactics and techniques with great proficiency. What IS required is your drive and determination.
Q: What about physical fitness? Is UST only about fighting?

A: Urban Survival Tactics utilizes high-intensity drills and training methods that rival any form of fitness training you’ll find anywhere. Physical fitness is incorporated into every training session, including cardiovascular and strength building exercises, while putting emphasis on speed, agility, endurance, strength, accuracy and coordination. In fact, many students choose to train in UST solely for the fitness benefits. Each class will challenge you; leaving you sweaty and exhausted, so not only will you be developing a self defense skill set second to none, you will get into outstanding shape while you do it.

Q: Okay! I’m ready to give UST a try…What do I do next?

A: Great! Simply check our schedule on the website or call us at (386) 423-2008 to find out when the next available class is. Then, just show up ready to train! Everyone is entitled to a free class to see if UST is right for them. You have nothing to loose (except for some unwanted pounds) and so much to gain.
